Ethiopia's Exchange Rate Gap Narrows as Reforms Take Hold

The informal birr rate has moved closer to the official rate in 2026, though the gap remains wider than policymakers projected.

Ethiopia's currency gap has narrowed substantially over the first half of 2026, driven by policy reforms aimed at bringing the parallel market closer to official rates. The gap remains wider than policymakers had initially projected, however, underscoring the continued challenge of currency convergence.

As of July 11, 2026, the informal exchange rate for the US dollar against the Ethiopian birr ranged from approximately 179.67 to 183.02 birr per dollar, compared to the official National Bank of Ethiopia rate of around 158.84 birr per dollar. This gap matters for ordinary Ethiopians who rely on informal currency markets, and for diaspora members whose transfer values are directly affected by the spread.

The National Bank of Ethiopia credits a combination of 2026 measures with narrowing the gap: allowing banks and forex bureaus room to negotiate market-reflective exchange rates directly, cutting the export surrender requirement, and reducing transaction fees. Regular National Bank of Ethiopia auctions have also improved liquidity in the formal market.

Estimates of the current gap vary by source. One assessment places it at roughly 12 percent above the official rate, a significant contraction from previous years. Another estimate suggests the gap stands closer to 15 to 20 percent above the official rate as of mid-2026. Both figures indicate progress, yet also show the market has not fully converged.

The gap's persistence is notable because earlier projections for 2026 had been more optimistic — some forecasters had anticipated the gap narrowing further, toward a target range of five to eight percent by mid-2026. That tighter target does not appear to have been achieved based on current market conditions.

This currency gap traces back to Ethiopia's pre-2024 fixed exchange rate system, under which the birr traded on the parallel market at more than twice the official rate before the 2024 float reform. The 2026 reforms represent continued effort to complete that transition toward a more unified market.
