Ethiopia's Foreign Reserves Triple to $6.8 Billion, Signaling Currency Stability Gains

According to a 2026 report by the African Export-Import Bank, the country's forex reserves have surged from $2.0 billion in 2023 to $6.8 billion in 2025, bolstered by market-based currency reforms and stronger external inflows.

Ethiopia's foreign exchange reserves have more than tripled in two years, reaching $6.8 billion in 2025 according to the African Export-Import Bank's 2026 report. The surge signals a major shift in the country's macroeconomic position after years of foreign currency shortages that constrained imports and remittance availability. Import cover, a key measure of currency stability, climbed to three months in 2025 from 1.8 months the previous year. Financial analysts consider three months of import reserves a minimum safe buffer for emerging economies, meaning Ethiopia has now crossed a critical threshold that should ease currency pressures and improve the availability of dollars in the banking system.

The improvement stems from several policy shifts announced over the past two years. Ethiopia moved to a market-based foreign exchange regime beginning in 2024, tightened monetary policy, and benefited from stronger inflows of external capital and remittances. The birr has weakened significantly in this process, trading at 138.4 per US dollar in 2025 compared to 83.1 the previous year, as authorities allowed the currency to find market-clearing levels rather than maintaining a fixed or artificially supported rate. The National Bank of Ethiopia has simultaneously implemented reforms including FEMoUS, a system aimed at enhancing transparency and stability in how reserves are managed.

The International Monetary Fund has projected Ethiopia's foreign exchange reserves could reach $6 billion, though analysts caution that global commodity price movements pose risks ahead. Ethiopia's export earnings depend heavily on coffee and gold, whose prices fluctuate with global market conditions. For diaspora members who send money home, stronger foreign exchange reserves typically translate to better availability of dollars for conversion, smoother remittance processing, and greater confidence in the country's ability to maintain a stable exchange rate over time.
